Although public spaces are designed to be accessible to everyone, they often present numerous physical and sensory barriers for people with visual impairments. These barriers affect their mobility, orientation, and sense of inclusion.
In her PhD project, Verica Kovacevska explores the lived and embodied experiences of visually impaired individuals in public spaces. Through artistic research and practice, she aims to develop a more nuanced understanding of their needs, gain deeper insights into their perspectives, and challenge existing norms and systems. A central element of the PhD is the creation of a cartographic format using a digital tool, developed in collaboration with the City Science Lab in Hamburg.
While the findings are shared with a general audience, they are especially meant to resonate with professionals working at the intersection of space, policy, and design, inviting them to reconsider how public environments are shaped and experienced.
