Colour, recycling, textile design, design research, circularity, sustainability
The textile industry is resource-intensive and responsible for a significant proportion of global pollution emissions. Fibre-to-fibre recycling is an emerging discipline that is widely considered to be offering hope for a sustainable, circular textile industry. Current developments offer opportunities to address the toughest challenges in the industry, including textile dyeing. To promote ecological outcomes, the colours used for textiles are being investigated as valuable resources that must be preserved for a second lifecycle or beyond. Tina Tomovics' dissertation aims to provide in-depth insights into today's unsustainable dyeing practices, to consider ways of rethinking colours in textile recycling, to establish connections within the dyeing industry, and to educate designers and design students about best practices.
