In his dissertation, Pablo Müller uses the example of the art journal "Texte zur Kunst" (founded 1990 Cologne) to investigate the practice of "involved" art criticism. In this context, art criticism is not considered a venue for educational interpretation and explanation, but for a socio-economically and culturally entrenched, critical reflection. However, the involvement of "Texte zur Kunst" does by no means limit its critical agency, but creates a productive, charged environment.
The dissertation contrasts art criticism that considers itself to be "involved" with the singular-authorial understanding of criticism that was still the norm in the 1970s. At the same time, it considers the approach pursued by the art journal "Texte zur Kunst" in the wider context of the (re-)politisation of art in the German-speaking world after 1990.
In addition to analysing involved art criticism, Pablo Müller therefore offers a historical appraisal of the art journal "Texte zur Kunst" within the German-language art discourse of the 1990s.
