In his artistic doctoral thesis project Making Public Space, Jürgen Buchinger explores the potential of time-based media to alter urban spaces.
Through artistic interventions, he creates chance encounters and space for exchanges, encouraging urban residents to engage with their cities' design. Topics such as gentrification, the search for free spaces and our coexistence with non-human city dwellers are being addressed on-site, in the urban spaces where they occur. The experiments conducted as part of the research process include collaborative film recordings, large-scale projections in urban spaces, interactive sculptures and reflexive videos. The results of the artistic experiments were recorded using methods of performative ethnography and autoethnography.
To account for the different forms of knowledge generated through artistic research, Jürgen Buchinger has made his results accessible in an exhibition and through a publication.
