During the studies

The Bachelor of Arts in Video is structured in this way, as the students on our degree programme explain.

The degree programme imparts the main aspects of film production. It draws on documentary film, video essays and experimental formats to foster students’ personal artistic position as well as a signature style in image, sound and narration.

General information

The bachelor’s degree programme specialisation in Video takes students through the entire production process, from idea and research to shooting script, on to shooting and then post production, and finally to the finished film. The students are taught technical craftsmanship, artistic expertise and theoretical knowledge in practice. Documentary, essay and experimental forms, which are tried out in practice in short films, take centre stage.

The program
Students first learn about the creative areas of sound, camera, and editing. At the same time, the fundamentals of film theory and dramaturgy broaden their cinematic horizons and give them an understanding of media-specific issues. Self-study periods provide opportunities to deepen technical and creative knowledge, realize small personal projects, or gain practical experience by participating in projects. From the outset, we emphasize connections to the current film scene, inviting national and international guests to workshops and discussions and attending film festivals.

In the second year of study, the focus shifts to authorship and responsibility towards protagonists and the audience. Open discussion of documentary film and video essays creates an inspiring environment for questioning classic genre definitions and venturing into experimental territory. Supported by lecturers from various departments, short film projects are developed and implemented in teams. Students take turns in their roles and thus become familiar with all functions. Reflecting on the work process helps them discover their strengths and weaknesses and find their personal position within film production. Internships are another opportunity to explore their specific interests.

In the third year of study, students complete their studies with a written and practical bachelor's thesis on a topic of their choice. Once again, they produce short documentary films and video essays, which are conceived and implemented in the roles of (co-)director, camera operator, sound engineer, or editor. By concentrating on one of these four focus areas, students can deepen their broad basic knowledge in a targeted manner. Writing a dossier and dealing with financing, rights, and film promotion prepare students for the professional demands of their future careers.

In the theory modules at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts – Design & Art, which accompany the entire course of study, students also deal with theoretical and scientific questions relating to art, design, media, culture, and philosophy. In the first and second years, they also take part in interdisciplinary IDA (Interdisciplinarity in Design and Arts) modules lasting several weeks, in which they work with students from other disciplines and, under the guidance of a multidisciplinary team of lecturers, deal with current topics and trends.
