1st Semester   Textile Design

Analogue and digital design techniques in the fields of print, embroidery, weaving and knitting are the focus of teaching in the first year of study. The goal is a comprehensive understanding of surface design, the relation of figurative motif to ground, the effect of colours (also when interwoven), types of thread and thread systems, and the core element of textile design, which is pivotal to this high art: the pattern repeat.

INFINITY

A broad design repertoire is necessary to be able to make virtuoso use of design possibilities. In this module, students develop a methodological toolbox that they can draw on in the design process. In parallel, they practise ornamentation strategies, manual printing techniques and digital design tools. In a second step, design, repeat and continuous surfaces are the topic. The most important types of offsets and distribution possibilities in various design techniques are implemented in reported designs.

SURFACE

The students examine their surroundings in relation to surfaces. After a broad research phase, they explore the workshops of the print shop, embroidery and the possibilities of the other machinery. They develop a broad repertoire of textile printing and embroidery techniques, make targeted use of colour and become sensitised to the creative potential of the interplay between materiality and design. The students deepen ornamental and manipulative techniques individually and complement them with non-textile materials: wood veneers, mirrors, wallpapers or ceramics.
