Guiding principles of our educational programme

The world is moving towards digital spaces and network-building. But then it also keeps returning to the human values that underpin proximity and the tangible. The students at the Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art work at this intersection. They are committed to engaging with the unknown and the indefinite. Their education allows them to do so.

The students at the Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art are guided by their specialisation in the fields of Design, Film, or Fine Arts. It is the initial source of, and an anchor for, their skills and actions. It is a starting point of the students’ individual path of learning. They develop future skills and build interdisciplinary connections. They seek proximity. Learning is a social process. Lecturers and students work in small teams and are in close contact with each other in our space of creative work at 745 Viscosistadt, in Luzern-Emmenbrücke, and beyond.

Future skills

The Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art is a place for people who shape the future, who venture into the unknown with an open mind. Designers, filmmakers and artists have the capability to identify alternative ways of organising society, culture, business and technology and to find new approaches. They successfully use the skills and knowledge drawn from their area of specialisation and complement them with seven transdisciplinary future skills:

  • Digitality: Understanding and using new technologies
    Students familiarise themselves with the specifics of the digital world, they reflect on them and understand how they work. They take an artistic and creative approach to digital media.
  • Explorative Research: Questions before answers
    Students learn creative, artistic and scientific methods while examining new fields of knowledge acquisition.
  • Creative Entrepreneurship: Building a business
    Students know how to position themselves and their work on the market, and how to create networks and to build an existence.
  • Critical Thinking: Reflecting on Design, Film and Fine Arts
    Students adopt a critical stance towards their own creative practice. They define their own actions in terms of different art, design and film theories which they explore and apply.
  • Materials and Practice: Creating something
    Students realise their ideas in our digital and physical workshops and acquire technical (artistic) skills.
  • Sustainability: Taking responsibility for the planet
    Students increase their awareness for the consequences of ecological and economic actions and their impact on the environment. 
  • Self-empowerment and Engagement: Finding and applying one’s identity. Students reflect on themselves and on their role within the team and in society at large. They develop a distinct personality, adopt a personal stance and make an impact with their actions.
     

For the students, this means that all interdisciplinary +++Modules are associated with the aforementioned seven future skills, giving students the opportunity to actively engage with new challenges in the areas of society, culture, technology and business in their studies. They face the future and question it to make it truly sustainable.

Individual Paths of Learning 

Design, Film und Kunst studieren

What is my contribution to the world? It is no longer a diploma in a specific discipline that define a person; today, it is their personal set of skills, experience and values, or in short, their identity that make them. The Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art is committed to fostering this plurality of identities. We offer modular education programmes that let the students choose the skills they wish to acquire and where they want to take them in the future.

For the students, this means that the Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art offers them the freedom to create their own path of learning. Within their +++Modules, students compile their own curriculum. Thanks to the Open Specialised Modules, students may attend selected courses from other specialisations. Lecturers support and supervise their students and give them the responsibility of self-determined learning.

Interdisciplinarity

As humans, we are confronted with an increasing level of complexity, interconnectedness and digitalisation. New spaces, disciplines and positions are emerging. New lines are drawn as old ones dissolve. This dynamic environment requires actors who know how to move between spaces, build bridges and reciprocally translate ways of thinking and languages. Methods from a single discipline no longer suffice to address the world’s complexity. People must join forces: we need diversity, co-creation and dialogue. 

For the students, this means that, the Lucerne School of Design, Film and Art offers a range of interdisciplinary courses that build new specialist and personal connections in its +++Modules. Students are given the opportunity to step out of their bubble and to gain new perspectives.
