Biography
Luca Schaffer is a research assistant in artistic research, photographer, and doctoral candidate. His research focuses on the theory of operative images, the remediation of photography, the aesthetics of synthetic media and algorithmically networked image cultures, and the socio-technical and documentary implications of generative image practice. Luca completed a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts and Art Education and a Master of Arts in Critical Image Practices, both with a focus on photography, at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. His bachelor's thesis “unsung” was nominated for the Zeugin Design Prize, and his master's thesis “machine_gaze” was awarded the Chapeau Prize for the best master's thesis.
In his research, he investigates how algorithmic probability calculations shape the role of the image as a formative force of post-indexical realities in the field of post-digital, generative image production. He is interested in new forms of realism, criticism, and visibility in the age of image-generating algorithms.
