Before MFA registration

What is MFA?

The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts uses multifactor authentication (MFA), an authentication method that requires two proofs of identity (factors) to be provided before access to the desired resource is granted. Instead of requesting only a username and password, MFA requires additional proofs of identity to ensure that the username and password belong to the person logging in.

Does the MFA registration have to be done? Can it be done without?

All students, employees and external persons who wish to access resources of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts must complete the MFA registration.

When is an MFA confirmation required?

An MFA confirmation is always required when a logon to a service of the university takes place outside the network of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Note: For access from outside the university network (e.g. home office), a VPN connection with Pulse Secure is recommended. In this case, only a one-time MFA confirmation is required. 

For an external connection without VPN, an MFA confirmation is required each time you log on to a service. 

What is required for MFA registration?

The following requirements apply for MFA registration:

  • Smartphone with internet access and SIM card
  • Personal email address of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (e.g. firstname.name@stud.hslu.ch)
  • Knowledge of the personal password

I do not have a user account at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

The following requirements apply for MFA registration without a user account:

  • Invitation by email for Teams, SharePoint or OneDrive
  • Possession of an M365 corporate or school account OR Microsoft Live ID (private account)
  • Smartphone with internet access OR with SIM card or phone line

I do not have a smartphone.

If you do not have a smartphone or do not wish to use it for business purposes, please contact the Service Desk.

MFA registration in 4 steps

This video guides you step by step through the registration process for Multifactor Authentication (MFA). The instructions are for students and staff with a university user account.

To activate English subtitles, proceed as shown in the instruction "MFA registration with user account".

Please use your HSLU/PHLU email address (ex. firstname.name@stud.hslu.ch) when activating MFA with user account.

The 4 steps of MFA activation:

00:42 step 1 - Install Microsoft Authenticator app on smartphone.
02:02 step 2 - Start registration in the web browser
03:21 step 3 - Scan the QR code with your smartphone
04:45 step 4 - Complete registration in the web browser

What does an MFA confirmation look like?

This video shows the registration and the MFA confirmation at the most common services (MyCampus, VDI, Webmail and VPN) of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

I have a new smartphone/mobile phone number.

 You can find out how to register a new smartphone with the Authenticator app or a new mobile phone number in this video.

I have lost my smartphone.

Contact the Service Desk to have the MFA registration reset. Subsequently, this video will show you how to re-register after the reset.

I have received an MFA request which I did not initiate myself.

If an unknown, therefore not self-initiated, MFA confirmation request is received, this potential fraud alert can be reported using the Microsoft Authenticator app or via the call method. Once a fraud alert is received by IT Services, the MFA login will be blocked for that individual. MFA logins will then no longer be possible until further notice. You will then receive the necessary steps for unblocking by email from the Service Desk.
