Wood-Plastic-Composites (WPC) represent a new generation of sustainable outdoor material which meanwhile raised the interest of the massively bulk-plastics consuming building industry. This is because latest codes in the building scope centred aspects like the use of environmentally friendly products and constructions and a sustainable raw material handling. The literature about WPC sees particularly in cladding a high potential to increase the ecological aspect of a building in the light of norms and codes.
However, current building regulations also demand from engineers, and as such from façade planners, that a construction must perform safely over its life time. WPC cladding manufacturers thus have to declare those product properties which support the design of a WPC façade for a target project. Or in return, an engineer primary specifies façade products which most provide information about its performance and design methods. As a consequence, WPC cladding manufacturers should have a deep knowledge in engineering design and norms in the field of façades.
This study sheds the light on applicable norms and codes for the development of WPC-based façade products for the building industry. Its primary goal is to provide insights which show how a building planner usually conducts a design for a target façade project and which product properties should be declared by a WPC cladding manufacturer. European and national regulations in the field of WPC material and façade application will play a dominant role as well as planning peculiarities derived from a practitioner`s point of view. As a second step findings from WPC cladding performance tests are presented and discussed.
In a wider context, results have managerial implications for the innovation management of novel WPC-based building products. The development process thus has to integrate application-oriented aspects in the early planning phase which therefore ensures a high level of target customer preference compliance. This will consequently contribute to a product`s market success.
