Katrina Sluis is a founding Co-Director of the Centre of the Study of the Networked Image, London South Bank University and Adjunct Research Curator at The Photographers’ Gallery, London. With a technical background in systems administration and early internet technologies, her research is broadly engaged with photography’s relationship to computation, its social circulation and cultural value.
She is presently collaborating with Dr Wolfgang Brückle on the SNF Funded Project Curating Photography in the Networked Image Economy.
From 2011 - 2019 she was the first Curator of Digital Programming at The Photographers' Gallery, commissioning works by artists including Erica Scourti, Penelope Umbrico, James Bridle and Alan Warburton and projects For the LOL of Cats: Felines, Photography & the Web (2013), Born in 1987: The Animated GIF (2012) and Motherlode (2013). She established the annual Experimental Photo School, the online platform http://unthinking.photography and in 2018 curated All I Know Is What's On The Internet which included the major commission Jonas Lund: Operation Earnest Voice (Brexit Division).
From 2005 – 2018 she was Senior Lecturer in Photography & New Media at London South Bank University, where she was the Course Director of the BA Digital Media Arts (Hons) 2015 - 2012.
She has lectured widely on photography, curating and digital culture at institutions including Whitechapel Gallery, ICA, Tate Modern, HKW, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Foto Colectania, Royal College of Art, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, National Institute of Design (India) and New York University. She is on the editorial advisory board of Photographies Journal (Routledge), Photomediations (Culture Machine) and the Open Humanities Press book series MEDIA : ART : WRITE : NOW.
