Sabine Junginger is an internationally recognized expert in human-centered design and its role in innovating private and public organizations. Her work is valued by researchers and practitioners in interaction design, service design, design management, engineering) and is noted in business, management, law and policy concerned with systemic changes, new ways of working and sustainable innovation.
Her articles have appeared in Design Issues, The Design Journal, The Journal of Business Strategy (Elsevier), the Journal for Organizational Design and Enterprise Engineering (Springer), as well as the Annual Policy Review and the Design Management Review. She was Guest Editor for Emerging Issues in Service Design, a Special Issue of the Design Journal and also for The Evolution of Design Management, a Special Issue of the Design Management Journal.
She is co-editor of three books, of which two have become mandatory reading for students in design management (The Handbook of Design Management, 2011 and Designing Business and Management, 2016, both Bloomsbury, UK).
She is an expert for the EU program Design for Europe, the EU program DESMA, the EU Sectorial Dialogues Brazil-EU, the External Member of the Faculty of Art and Design for the Research Committee at the Free University Bozen (IT), and member of the scientific board of Alpbach Forum Europe. This book reviews recent design developments in policy and public management and offers a nuanced analysis and discussion of design thinking and design methods that dominate the conception and development of products and services in the public sector. Sabine Junginger argues that people do and cannot experience policies per se but get to know policies mainly through the (public) services through which a specific policy comes to life and thus enacted. She shows that research and practice in the field of policy have yet to embrace and attend to the conception, planning and development of actual products and services in the early stages of policy-making and demonstrates the value gained in policy work and social innovation by doing so. This book was endorsed by the OECD Observatory Platform for Public Sector Innovation, which invited Sabine Junginger to introduce her book to public sector innovators on its innovation blog.
ESTABLISHING DESIGN RESEARCH & DESIGN EDUCATION IN ASIA
Asia, in particular China and India, have invested heavily in design research and design education over the past 10 years in an effort to shift their countries role in the global economy from one of providing cheap labor to one of creating cutting-edge innovative products and services. Issues of human-centered design and sustainability as well as the challenges of systemic changes are concerns for doctoral design education as well as for businesses seeking new relationships with design practitioners. In her function as Visiting Professor at the School of Design at Jiangnan University in Wuxi (China) and as a Founding Member and Member of Board of Editors of She Ji, Design, Economics, and Innovation Quarterly (DEIQ), the first Chinese Design Research Journal hosted by the College of Design & Innovation, Tongji University, Shanghai, Sabine Junginger regularly contributes to design education on the Doctoral, Master and Bachelor level and participates in Chinese design education conferences. Examples include: the 2013 International Conference on Interaction Design in X’ian, China (organized by Northwestern Polytechnical University, Jiangnan University, Carnegie Mellon University, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University) where she gave the opening keynote, at Tongji University in Shanghai and the five-year long Re-designing design conference series at Jiangnan University in Wuxi. She works with the Design Management group at Tsinghua University in Beijing and has taught at Nanjing University and the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chonquin. She has delivered keynotes to the Association of International Schools of India and collaborates with the National Institute of Design in India on projects and doctoral design education.
BRIDGING DESIGN THEORY & DESIGN PRACTICE IN POLICY
Sabine Junginger makes theories of human-centered design, product development, interaction design and design management accessible and usable to policy-makers and public managers. In recognition of her cutting-edge work in this area and to share her methods with scientists concerned about social innovation and global health, she has been invited twice by German Chancellor Merkel to participate in the prestigious International German Forum (2015 & 2017) held in the Chancellor’s Office in Berlin. The Austrian Chancellor’s Office calls on her expertise as does the Japanese Ministry of Environment currently in the process of setting up a Nudging Unit. For several years, she was a Scientific Advisor for Denmark’s cross ministerial innovation unit Mindlab (2013-1016). She also served on DesignGov for the Australian Government (2013). Currently, she is a member of the scientific board of Alpbach Forum Europe (Austria) and a Fellow at The Hertie School of Governance in Berlin (2009-ongoing). Her work is referred to by the OECD Observatory Platform for Public Sector Innovation, NESTA and a number of Public Sector Innovation initiatives including Switzerland (staatslabor.ch), Chile (goblab.cl), Brazil (invovagov.br), Denmark (mind-lab.dk), the UK (policyconnect.org.uk), the US (lab.opm.gov), and France (superpublic.fr).
