The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) is taking a firm stand against the war in Ukraine and offers support to students and researchers affected by the conflict. The support currently available is detailed below.
Please consult the information website of the State Secretariat for Migration to find out whether you come under protection status S and what entitlements are associated with it. After entering Switzerland, you have up to 90 days to apply for protection status S. It is recommended that you register quickly to secure your accommodation, support and medical care packages (in addition to your right of abode). Students or prospective students from Ukraine have various options for continuing or starting their degree programmes at the HSLU, depending on the capacity we can offer.
1) As visiting students
Visiting students are not enrolled, but can complete modules and exams, and the ECTS credits earned are provided as evidence. A visiting student programme usually lasts for a maximum of two semesters; places are subject to availability. Conditions: • The degree programme at the home university has already been started • The home university is located in Ukraine • Sufficient knowledge of the language of instruction (usually German or English) • The HSLU has a suitable degree programme
2) As extramural observers
Extramural observers are not enrolled, no ECTS credits are earned and no exams are sat. Participation in this programme depends on when the person arrives. An extramural observer programme can be converted into a visiting student programme or enrolment (see item 3). Conditions: • A degree programme has already been started at the home university, or the person wants to find out about starting a degree programme in the chosen area of specialisation • The home university is located in Ukraine • Sufficient knowledge of the language of instruction (usually German or English) • The HSLU has a suitable degree programme
3) As students (enrolment)
A bachelor’s or master’s degree programme at the HSLU can be started and continued as an enrolled student. For admission to a Bachelor's or Master's degree programme, the same admission conditions apply to student refugees as to all other prospective students. Deviations such as requirements, specialist examinations or clarifications in the event of missing documents can be checked and determined individually. Please refer to the websites of the relevant degree programmes for details of the registration process.

Researchers from Ukraine interested in coming to the HSLU should get in direct touch with the relevant HSLU institutes.
The HSLU also advertises vacancies at ScienceforUkraine.
The HSLU is a member of Scholars At Risk, an international network of academic institutions that supports and defends the principles of academic freedom and the human rights of academics around the world. Additional funding can be applied for for individual researchers from Ukraine in collaboration with SAR and the Swiss National Science Foundation. This is intended to facilitate the admission of researchers The guidelines for Scholars At Risk applications must be consulted. There are no deadlines. Researchers from Russia who are also at risk due to the war should apply to SAR via the usual channels.
