Performance of three pieces
one stylistically freely selectable piece («carte blanche»): e.g. self-composed piece / improvisation / standard / original / ...
two standards (from reference list) or one standard (reference list) and one freely selectable Blues (see information leaflet; other standards may be chosen subject to the approval of the Study Coordinator in Jazz)
The performance of the standards or the standards and the Blues may be solo or accompanied by a rhythm section provided by the School (piano, bass, drums).
The freely chosen «carte blanche» piece with a reference length of 5 minutes serves the purpose of showcasing the candidate’s individual musical skills and affinities to the board of examination and may be performed as follows:
solo or self-accompanied (effect devices are permitted)
with a rhythm section or as a duo/trio with individual musicians of the trio (in which case clearly legible lead sheets must be provided for the musicians to play from)
with a self-produced accompaniment from a CD, .mp3-player or computer (which will be connected to the School’s PA system)
Sight reading of a lead sheetInterpretation of a theme, improvisation over the changes, comping (only for rhythm section instruments). No preparation time granted (vocals: short preparation with piano). Accompaniment by a rhythm section provided by the School (piano, double bass, drums).

Please note:The standards must be chosen from the reference list, a Blues may be chosen freely (see
information leaflet, Bachelor programme entrance examination, Jazz profile). Subject to the approval of the Study Coordinator in Jazz, Michael Arbenz standards other than those on the reference list may be chosen.
The selected pieces may be transposed or arranged, in which case clearly legible lead sheets for the rhythm section must be brought to the exam. Besides that, keys, changes and arrangements from the established real books apply.
The chosen pieces must be clearly distinct from each other in terms of tempo and rhythmic style.
A microphone, PA system, amplifier and drum kit will be available.
Theory examsAdmission to the theory exams is contingent on the successful completion of the practical exams.
