What is 3D-FDM-Printing and how does the build process work?
The 3D-printing technology is a rapid prototyping process that enables the generation of models directly from CAD data. FDM stands for Fused Deposition Modeling. The models are built layer by layer from durable and stable thermoplastic polymer (ABS) from bottom to top. Where necessary (i.e. overhangs), the model is propped up by a support construction that is later dissolved.
Preferred data formats:
- STL-file
- All other commonly used CAD format upon request
Maximum part size:
- 203mm x 203mm x 305mm – larger models are printed in subparts and then bonded together.
Layer thickness
The printer model available at the CC Mechanical Systems supports printing at two different resolutions. Standard layer thickness is 0.25mm. Upon request models can be printed at a resolution of 0.17mm layer thickness, which leads to a significantly smoother surface.
Material strength
The material strength difference between the two layer thicknesses is minimal. However, up to 40% strength difference is discernible based on the orientation of the model in the printing chamber. The strength depends on the build orientation. In the finished state they reach roughly 50% of regular ABS plastics.
Printing material
The printed material is Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene ABS (P400). The colors natural white, white, black, grey, red, blue and orange can be printed.
Supporting material
The support material is a plastic that dissolves in an alkaline solution. It is used only during the build process and later separated from the final part.
3D-PolyJet-Printer
What is 3D-PolyJet Printing and how does the build process work?
For 3D printing by PolyJet process 3D-CAD data are also required. The printing process is comparable with an ink jet printer. Liquid plastic is applied layer by layer from bottom to top. UV-light is used to cure the plastic (photopolymerization). Where required (overhangs), the model is propped up by a support construction. The printed parts feature a very good surface quality and adherence to details.

- 300 x 200 x 150 mm – larger models are printed in subparts and then bonded together.
Layer thickness
The OBJET 30 Pro available at the CC Mechanical Systems supports printing at 0.016 mm layer thickness. This allows for a very pleasing surface quality, even for spherical objects.
Printing material
The printed material is a photopolymer based on an acrylic resin. Curing starts with illumination by UV-light. The material is temperature resistant up to about 60°C. The following materials can be printed:
- Vero Clear, a transparent material
- RGD525, a temperature resistant material up to 60°C
- VeroWhitePuls, white material,
- VeroBlue, blue material
- VeroBlack, black material
- VeroGray, gray material
- DurusWhite, a material similar to polypropylene
Supporting material
Upon completion of printing, the support material is removed by water jet. It is an environmentally friendly, non-toxic gel.
