Breaking down energy consumption to identify the consumption of individual household appliances is extremely challenging and not always very precise. The «Energy Aware IoT» project is therefore carrying out research to determine whether a breakdown of consumption is required or if devices can measure their own energy use and make this data available externally. This would make data encryption superfluous since information could be processed directly. Devices which have the capacity to carry out independent energy consumption measurement are referred to as «energy aware».
The project, commissioned by the BFE, aims to identify the challenges involved in setting up a network of «energy aware» devices. Such devices will, in all probability, be connected to the Internet, hence the term «energy aware» Internet of Things (IoT). Our research will examine communication technologies; the hardware additions required in devices and architectures to evaluate and secure data.
We are at the very beginning of an «energy aware» IoT but the trend to digitalization in every area of our lives gives reason to believe that we will soon have to focus on this issue more intensively.
