As well as various research projects, the iHomeLab-Team is running a smart home, the iHomeLab on the campus of the Lucerne Scool of Engineering and Architecture in Horw. This intelligent building is completely operated with internet of things technology.
The team of the iHomeLab researches within the EU project Butler Smart Live in the field of applications and services to make the vision of the Internet of Things come true. It focuses on smart resource management and digital security to ensure the pervasiveness and awareness required from users.
Networked machines communicate with each other and provide data. The data is intelligently linked and analysed. For example, traffic reports with agenda entries. Thus, the Internet of Things can support and help to plan a trip.
For networked objects, there are currently a variety of names. Thus, for example, one speaks of "Internet of Things" or "IoT", "Internet of Everything" or "IoE", "Machine 2 Machine" or "M2M".

Thanks to the network of objects it is possible to provide support in various areas of everyday life.
Internet of Things technology is used to control lighting or shutters with a smartphone or a building to be heated only when people are in it. It helps thanks to targeted information on power consumption to save energy. IoT increases comfort with new operating concepts, such as gestures or via smartphone. It makes buildings more secure, for example, with a fall detection. IoT could also, with the help of a chip in the key ring, automatically open a door or tell where the keyring is.
In retail, products with RFID tags (radio frequency identification tags) could be linked. The tags communicate almost directly with the management system. The system automatically tracks for example, what products are currently in stock or which have left the warehouse. This simplifies warehousing, supply chain or stockpiling at home.
The iHomeLab, the intelligent building on the campus in Horw is completely controlled by Internet of Things technology. This smart home gives an idea and shows examples on how Internet of Things could be implemented in the buildings of the future. The iHomeLab can be visited on a guided tour.
Together with the Alexandra Institute of Denmark the iHomeLab has published the German edition of the «IoT Comicbook». The Comicbook, based on 25 stories and scenarios, explains how the Internet of Things can help to make our lifes easier in the future.
