The institute combines teaching and research in the area of biomedical engineering and biomedical research in space. On behalf of ESA, the institute maintains the space support center BIOTESC that assists researchers in conducting experiments on board the European space laboratory COLUMBUS of the ISS. The medical technology course of studies focuses on the development and certification of medical devices.

On Dez 15, 2017 the Arthrospira project was launched and flown to the ISS with the SpX-13 rocket. The experiment will be accompanied by the ESA Support Center BIOTESC of the Competence Center Bioscience and Medical Engineering of Lucerne University of Applied Sciences.

The Center of Competence specializes in biomedical research in the fields of regenerative medicine, cardiology and reproductive medicine. Furthermore, the CC develops bioreactors to analyze the potential of algae and yeast.
The Institute of Medical Engineering and the Competence Center Bioscience and Medical Engineering offer various services. In the laboratories in Hergiswil several devices for the simulation of weightlessness are made available. In addition, BIOTESC plans and tests biological experiments for ESA and supports astronauts in conducting those experiments.
