Civil engineer awarded prize

Every year, the Civil Engineering student association awards the “Best of Bachelor” prize. This year’s awards ceremony was held on Friday, January 12, 2017. A prize is awarded for every Swiss university of applied sciences, with the jury having to decide between two pieces of coursework put forward by the universities. This year’s winner is Janet Greutmann.

The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts this year nominated Janet Greutmann for her bachelor’s thesis “Räumliche Scheibensysteme, Statik und Bemessung” (“Spatial plate systems – a structural analysis and design”) and Manuel Rieztler for his paper “Bauphysikalisches Verhalten von verglasten Paneelen” (“The physical behavior of glazed panels”).

The jury awarded Janet Greutmann the award for her thesis “Räumliche Scheibensysteme, Statik und Bemessung”. We would like to congratulate the two students on their nominations and Janet Greutmann for winning the award.

This year’s award was particularly special for the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, as it was the first to take place under the chairmanship of Albin Kenel, Head of the Institute of Civil Engineering, who was also appointed as chair of the Civil Engineering student association – the association of Civil Engineering degree programs at all Swiss universities of applied sciences – at the start of the year. 

The jury were impressed with both papers. Here are their summaries and laudation:

Janet Greutmann: Räumliche Scheibensysteme, Statik und Bemessung

“Janet Greutmann addresses a scientific and very theoretical subject. Using the publications and examples of the engineers Conzett and Seelhofer as her basis, she tests the stability of spatially load-bearing plate systems. Based on an analysis of examples, she develops a general system that allows her to record and examine the load-bearing effect of spatial¬ plate systems. Greutmann reviews the theoretical principles of the structural analysis of plate systems and the associated examples. Her documentation of such a complex subject was written in an exemplary manner. The spatial models on which the investigation was based were handled well analytically within the paper. Janet Greutmann applied her findings on an example from real life –the house with one wall, built by the architect Christian Kerez. It is not just the topic chosen that makes this paper stand out from the others, it’s also the great level of detail and complexity in which she writes.”

Manuel Rietzler: Bauphysikalisches Verhalten von verglasten Paneelen

“Manuel Rietzler tackles an area in which there is a dearth of research. The glazed panels used in the construction of façades feature air gaps in which condensation can form due to a lack of tightness that stem back to the manufacturing process. In order to estimate the likelihood of this phenomenon in glazed panels already at the design stage, Manuel Rietzler formulates a calculation procedure based on a visual and thermal model. This procedure can be used to simulate the temperature profile and humidity conditions of individual parts of a façade system. He uses a wide range of resources to verify the results of his program, including professional software for the evaluation of insulating glass. In addition, he uses a standard case to study the individual parameters that determine the physical behavior of panels. The paper impresses thanks to its logical structure, good documentation and the easy-to-understand way in which it deals with the complex topic. What’s more, it represents an ideal basis on which to carry out further -research in this specialist area.”
