In an end-of-semester discussion with Jillaine Farrar, who runs our Exchange Programme, Denholm Oliver especially noted the ideally situated city campus ("right at the lake and so close to the mountains") and the helpful 'buddy' programme, which helped get him started at the Lucerne School of Business. He particularly emphasized the benefits of the quality of the teaching and the long-lasting friendships he made. Three of the important decision-making factors in deciding where he chose to go on an exchange were the possibility of studying completely in English, adding a university known for excellent business and management education to his curriculum vitae, and having a central location from which to explore Switzerland and Europe. The Lucerne School of Business fulfilled those criteria.
What was Denholm Oliver doing when he was not studying? He was making use of the Campus Sport programme, enjoying Lucerne's student scene, and travelling around Europe at the weekends. He admits that he also spent time just gazing out the window at the picturesque Swiss Alps and enjoying a cappucino on the Business School's terrace.
Has he changed? He believes that everything he did and everything he learnt while on exchange has changed the way he views the world. He learned some German while here and tried it out on his new friends in Lucerne. Denholm Oliver and his Lucerne School of Business buddy became real friends. Both qualified in the Swiss University Football (soccer) championship held in Lugano this year.
When asked whether he would again choose Lucerne for his exchange semester if he could do it all over again, the reply was a resounding 'yes'. He said that living in Lucerne was not nearly as expensive as he had thought it would be.
