Biography
Kathi Kæppel is a media artist and academic who works in the fields of drawing, experimental animation and installation. She holds a diploma from the Kunsthochschule Berlin–Weißensee and a BFA from the University for the Creative Arts (UCA). Her projections, installations and films have been shown in galleries, institutions and at festivals worldwide such as Edinburgh International Film Festival, Biennial of Animation Bratislava and Les Rencontres Internationales. Her work was honoured with various prizes, including the Gold Award-Experimental film & video Remi awards, The Houston International Film Fest, the German Design Award and the ADC Award for Spatial Communication. Kæppel holds a DAAD grant, a Fulbright grant and grant from the Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit. She was founding member of the artistic group monogatari (1999 – 2005), that attracted attention with projects in the field of comic journalism. From 2000-2007 Kæppel worked as head of the animation department for the production company filmlounge and created numerous animated video clips for bands such as »Wir sind Helden«. Kæppel is a jury member and curator for the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS). Amongst others she has lectured at Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK), Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle, Kunsthochschule Kassel and HAW Hamburg. From 2014-2018 Kæppel worked as visiting professor at the Kunsthochschule Berlin–Weißensee. Since 2019 Kæppel works as part of the research group Visual Narrative at the HSLU D&K.
