Lauryn Youden (pronoun she) is a performance and installation artist, poet and curator based in Berlin. Her practice derives from her research and navigation of modern Western medicine, the medical-industrial complex, ‘alternative’ healing practices and traditional medicine for the treatment of her chronic illnesses and invisible disabilities. By publicly presenting her personal experiences and re-evaluations of the history of medicine through a feminist, Crip queer lens, her work illuminates and advocates for repressed, marginalized and forgotten practices of care and knowledge.
Lauryn Youden will discuss her practice as a disabled artist, an organizational member of the Berlin-based support group Sickness Affinity Group (SAG) as well as her work as a founding member and co-director of the space Ashley Berlin. SAG is a support group that challenges the competitive and ableist mode of working in the arts by sharing experiences and information and by prioritizing the well-being and access needs of its group members. Founded in 2013 by Canadian's, Lauryn Youden and Kate Brown, Ashley Berlin is project space that is both informed by Canada's linage of non-profit artist run-centres and Berlin's project space network. It has since won the Berlin Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa: Auszeichnung künstlerischer Projekträume in 2018 and Berlin Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa: Zweijährige Basisförderung für Projekträume und initiative in 2020/2021.
