UX4All

Modultype: elective module
Modul ID: DK.BA_+FO_UX.22
ECTS: 3.

Competences: Digitality, Explorative Research

Duration/Contact study
4. – 15. September 2022

Lecture(s):  Armin Egli and Flavio Lötscher

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After attending this module, students will be able to apply given design methods creatively and appropriately in a design process, as well as to identify user concerns in different development phases and to introduce them into the process. They can approach the needs, wishes and goals of users with empathy and creativity and deal (self-)critically with the insights gained.

CONTENT

User experience (UX) design deals with the human-centered design of (digital) products. The design process offers a toolbox of colourful methods that can be used in all phases of projects of various kinds (art, design, technology) and make a project more targeted, more lively, more creative or, in short, more successful.
In this module, students work exploratively with UX methods and relate them to their design practice and authorship, with the aim of evaluating and enriching a given project or conceiving a new one. With methods such as user analyses, role playing, cultural probes, personas, design games and fast-n-easy prototyping, they playfully approach a user-centred understanding of design that draws on user experience, human-centred design and social science.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

No formal prerequisites. A concrete field of application or project brought along is an advantage. The project can have a digital or analog character and come from art, design, technology.
Module in German. Language of instruction is German (if required, the course can also be conducted in English).

ASSESSED ASSIGNMENT(S)

Prerequisite is at least 80% attendance and active participation in the module. Submission of a report on the studies conducted and digital prototypes (portfolio-like).

GRADING OF ASSESSED ASSIGNMENT(S)

Passing is assessed according to the following criteria:
1. evaluation of the choice of methods and application (appropriateness, creativity, self-critical evaluation and implementation of the results).
2. functional criteria of the design prototypes (e.g. commitment, comprehensibility, appropriateness to the target group).
3. comprehensibility, critical reflection and argumentative persuasiveness of the final report.

RECORD

The module provides a very practical and applied introduction to the topic of user experience (UX) and also to the human-centered design approach, so that an understanding of the value of including users and the methods appropriate to do so can be developed.
