Artificial Intelligence Creative Practices and Critical Perspectives

Modultype: elective module
Modul ID: DK.BA_+FO_AI.25
ECTS: 3

Competences: Digitality, Critical Thinking

Duration/Contact study
September 1 – 12, 2025

Lecture(s): Thomas Knüsel & guests

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students acquire expertise in artificial intelligence – both practical and theoretical. They understand what fields AI can be used in, how basic concepts of it work and they are able to develop a critical perspective on the chances and risks of such technologies especially for society in general as much as for art and design.

CONTENT

The module provides an overview of theoretical and practical aspects of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the context of creative practicesThe focus is on a differentiated understanding of the various approaches and applications of generative image AI. These are critically discussed with regard to their social and subject-specific effects. The students develop and reflect on their own practical projects, which are situated in the area of tension between political discussions on the topic and the possibilities of application in their own creative work. By working independently with the AI tools, the students test and reflect on how their creative work relates to these tools.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Module in English

ASSESSED ASSIGNMENT(S)

Prerequisite is at least 80% attendance and active participation in the module: research, reflection and artistic-scientific, aesthetic analysis

GRADING OF ASSESSED ASSIGNMENT(S)

Passing will be assessed according to the following criteria:
1. research quality
2. transfer between practice and theory
3. conceptual quality of the own project
4. quality of the artistic-creative realisation

RECORD

The students have learned basic concepts and techniques of artificial intelligence and machine learning. In a hands-on approach they have evaluated different tools in regard to their own practices as artists and designers. They have critically reflected upon chances and risks of the technology.
