LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will be introduced to the theory and practice of shaping knitting on the hand knitting machine (Passap Duomatic 80), the hand embroidery machine (Lorraine) and on the computerized Bernina embroidery machine. The course offers insights into cultural-historical facts of form knitting and exercises (basic acquisition) on different possibilities of form knitting as well as an insight into the versatile world of embroidery around the world. The course can serve as an extension of existing embroidery and knitting knowledge or as an introduction to the respective technique. Technical know-how, exploring yarn qualities and design issues, can be systematically experienced through hands-on work.
The students keep a pattern book, which serves them for learning control, reproduction and further development of embroidery and knitting patterns and thus becomes a personal working tool.

CONTENT

Knitting: Getting to know the methods of shaping 2D and 3D knitwear, exploring the different techniques through practical work on the hand knitting machine. Basics of shaping are taught (widths and decreases, formulas for polygons and circular segments and tubular knits). The findings and exercises are recorded in a pattern book. Cultural-historical insights into past and present positions expand and complement the horizon on the subject.

Embroidery: Embroidery Week offers a broad look at the possibilities of this textile surface finishing. This includes an overview of the history, manufacturers and applications of various embroidery techniques, learning about different types of stitches, an introduction to operating the Lorraine hand machine (analog) as well as the computerized Bernina Artista (digital). Through the ABCs of embroidery, students will practice designing lines and areas, as well as try out designs on analog and digital embroidery machines.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The module is offen to all fields of study. It is especially suitable for OD, XS, TX and art students. No previous experience in hand knitting or embroidery is required. Both weeks must be attended. Module in German.

ASSESSED ASSIGNMENT(S)

Project presentation, sample book, min. 80% attendance

GRADING OF ASSESSED ASSIGNMENT(S)

The performance acquisition is evaluated based on 5 criteria:
1. handling of embroidery and knitting machine
2. technical understanding
3. successful completion of all exercises
4. independent work
5. keeping a complete pattern book as well as comprehensible notes

RECORD

Depending on their prior knowledge, students were able to gain initial or advanced insights into knitting and embroidery and to acquire a repertoire in the respective technique – knitting or embroidery. The main stitch types and knitting techniques for shaping knitwear were documented in a pattern book. Students experienced an awareness of the interplay between materiality and design of each technique and type of making. They gained cultural-historical insights in relation to the respective textile technique and design form in the fields of fashion, interior, art, medicine and technology.
