The Master in Film curriculum at the Lucerne School of Art and Design offers its students the opportunity to focus on a personal project over a period of two years. The students thus develop the skills necessary to become directors or authors of animation films, or to work in experimental, creative or applied film. Students may participate in interdisciplinary collaboration between all three Master programmes (Film, Fine Arts, Design).
Two years of study means two years of experimenting and developing one’s own ideas, guided and closely monitored by experienced practitioners, free of the immediate economic pressures of working to commission. Learning is based on autonomous experimentation, presentations and critiques, as well as the accumulation of practical experience. Both success and failure guide students along the path to their individual goal: we coach and mentor students as they navigate this path towards completion of their degree.
An important objective of the degree programme is building up a critical consciousness and a self-reflective attitude towards one’s own work, as well as positioning oneself in the contemporary world of professional filmmaking. The practical Master project is accompanied by a theoretical final assignment. Both are related: theoretical research can cast light on and offer solutions to problems in the practical project. Conversely, theory can help reflect on and better organise the Master project. Linking theory and practice in the Master in Film opens up the option for graduates to continue with doctoral studies and thus qualify for a career in teaching and research.
The degree programme’s core team is supplemented by external associate lecturers who offer introductions to their areas of speciality and, aside from their formal teaching, are available to discuss students’ projects and act as sparring partners. In addition, we work closely with the two related master’s programmes in Art and Design, in particular with lecturers in Illustration, Graphic Design and Video Art. We can thus find suitable coaches to assist all students in the successful completion of their Master Projects.
Contents of the Degree Programme
The Master in Film programme of the Lucerne School of Art and Design trains filmmakers capable of giving (provisional) answers to questions posed by the film world of the future. Students prepare themselves to enter a market undergoing rapid and incessant change. It aims at transforming graduates into self-confident authors and directors – proficient decision-makers, pioneers of digital film who can independently position themselves in both traditional and emerging vocational fields.
Students experiment with a wide range of storytelling forms using different media. As they reflect on such experiments with respect both to their own creative style and to the market they will be entering, they develop the necessary flexibility to react independently and appropriately to changes in their professional environment. To this end, the degree programme offers the following areas of focus:
- Digitalisation of moving image and changes in media systems
- New forms and new locations of (cross-platform and serialised) storytelling, in particular short-form storytelling
- Film and business: project management and project acquisition, financing and budgeting complex film projects
- Fostering linguistic and argumentative competence in word and script
Employment / Part-time study
The regular period of study for the Master in Film is four semesters. Contact hours and class attendance are usually limited to Mondays through Thursdays. It is thus possible to pursue limited employment during the degree course.
In addition, after consultation it is also possible to study part time. Prerequisites for this option include active participation during contact hours and the possibility to adapt workloads outside the programme to the exigencies of the degree course. Details can be discussed and agreed upon individually.
