Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication with Specialisation in Illustration Fiction
Illustration is a reflective craft and for anyone with an open mind and a talent for reading images and devising signs it opens doors to numerous fields. Illustrators position themselves either as authors or facilitators, pursuing their own ideas and visions or accepting commissions for commentaries, reports and consultancy. Their clients are in the cultural industries, advertising, communications, the media, education, and business. Some have agents who represent them; others join forces with colleagues in a shared studio or office. The core skills gained on this Bachelor programme are visual fluency and creative thinking, visual communication and mediation and an ability also to teach these skills. Graduates are qualified also to pursue a Master’s degree programme, such as the Master’s in Fine Arts with a specialisation in Art Teaching (MAT).
Potential Career Paths: freelance illustrator, author in the illustration field, or in exhibition design, signage ethics, and education and outreach/ as a designer, web or game designer/ in advertising as an art director, in art buying, as a visual consultant, in marketing/ as a visual journalist or in the field of graphic recording/ in film, theatre and advertising as a storyboarder, character designer, set designer, concept artist, in the fields of stage design, costume design, fashion, etc./ and (solely with a Master’s) as a teacher of aesthetic education.

The admission procedure is divided into two parts. After registering (before the deadline!), applicants submit their documents, a portfolio and a work assignment realised on a set theme. In the event of a positive decision, they are invited to attend an interview – and additionally, in the case of Illustration Nonfiction, to attend an examination day.
