In the dissemination of knowledge, pictures that arrange, simplify and graphically interpret complex information play an increasingly important role. While representations in historic atlases and encyclopedias in the areas of biology, medicine, entomology or geology used to serve purely documentary purposes, contemporary demands on pictures of knowledge reach far beyond this: The representation of complex connections, processes and abstract contents require visual creativity and the ability to visualise knowledge metaphorically in order to make it accessible to laypersons and experts alike. In this context, the degree course Illustration Nonfiction sees itself as a creative laboratory for the advancement of didactic visualisation and scientific illustration. Over the consecutive modules of the course the students develop the skills for an up-to-date professional qualification. Precise observation and a high sensitivity for perceiving the world and its appearance as well as the visual cognitive process form the foundation. Analytical seeing and drawing, traditional und digital techniques of implementation and painting are part of the craftsmanship. Visualisation of information, comic, typography, layout and reading guidance let the pictures speak for themselves. Conceptual and didactic thinking ensure a successful dissemination of knowledge. Not only the results of shaping knowledge leads to gains in awareness, but the process of visual translation itself brings surprising insights and therefore forms part of science and research.
