CONTENT
In the beginning of the 20th century the classic avant-garde movement was thrilled to achieve a style that was untangled from any historic roots, a position that can hardly be defended nowadays. New creations rarely stand-alone; they are a continuation of former creations and lines of traditions.
In this module the students research and analyse traditional technicalities, production technologies, product shapes, typographies, graphic styles, patterns and ornaments in small groups. By choosing a theme the groups move into more detailed studies, for example visiting museums and workshops or contacting experts. Based on the newly acquired knowledge the students conduct their individual design projects – a contemporary reinterpretation of traditions in a design model, a mock up or a graphic or typographic concept.
There will be a public presentation in Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, and a project documentation including a reflection on the work that will form the completion of the module.
OBJECTIVES
The aim of this module is to develop or realise a tangible object or graphic concept, which is inspired by its tradition in terms of shape, patterns, ornaments or the technology used to make it. It should be a reinterpretation without becoming a copy.
In the beginning of the project, each student is expected to critically observe and analyse a tradition and collect the necessary know-how to develop his or her own creative interpretation. Within this process, students will realise that most traditions have become outdated for various reasons, but may become valid again through new technological developments, or a reinterpretation of its meaning in a modern context.
Further analysis of recent examples of re- and retro-design will sharpen the students’ knowledge. Which factors determine a successful redesign? When does it become imitation or plagiarism?
From their observations, the students are expected to prepare a list of requirements, which will support them in selecting the most valuable ideas into successful creative interpretations.
