The students’ individual art projects form the basis of both majors.
The course comprises 120 ECTS points and takes two years.
The special advantages of an art course at the Lucerne School of Art and Design are: A committed team of lecturers with international experience; a wide range of workshops with modern, technical equipment; partnership of trust between the students and lecturers within a study and research community of a comprehensible size; varied contacts in the inter-disciplinary Lucerne campus and to an international network of art schools.

The master degree
The MAPS/MAT master degree is aimed at students with a particular interest in the themes of public art and art in the public spheres Personal art projects are at the centre of the study. The field covers aesthetic, and pedagogical, political and social questions. This should be seen as a constructive challenge to an increasingly utilitarian society and initiate work on aesthetic, social and economic innovations.
The master course at the Lucerne School of Art and Design is based on the interaction between artistic practice and pedagogical transfer with regard to both method and contents. This is also the key advantage of the closely connected majors: Art in the Public Spheres (MAPS) and Art Teaching (MAT).
A flexible study structure is important for the two-year master tracks. In project and theory modules the students’ projects are analysed and developed individually or in a team from its concept via the theoretical basis to the detailed planning for the realisation.
The budget plan is as much part of the art project management as cooperation with experts or the public presentation of the project. Students are supported, advised, inspired and motivated by their faculty lecturers and mentors on an ongoing basis. Contents and methods of art research are taught in modules on the main research topics of the School of Art and Design – «Art and the public spheres» and «Artistic material research»: Students can participate in the on-going research projects covering these themes.
Workshop courses offer the opportunity to engage with specific media and work forms (digital, 3D, 2D) always in relation to the projects. The students can improve their intercultural skills by visiting one of the art schools in the international MAPS network.
The students reflect the contents and aims of their practical art work and link it to a social and historical context. This artistic and theoretical work merges in the master thesis at the end of the course.
Major Art Teaching (MAT)
Major Art Teaching (MAT)
Masters students in the Art Teaching major base their pedagogic perspective directly on their personal art practice. As well as creating their own projects, they develop strategies and techniques through which appropriate art/pedagogical visual design aims for secondary level II can be realised. The students analyse and test how they can initiate and support individual visual experiences and form giving processes with their high school pupils of all levels via methodological and didactic competences. They learn how aesthetic education in a interdisciplinary educational environment can be introduced as a meaningful asset for perception and action. Specially focused modules offer the opportunity for personal training in social skills and for dealing with criticism and teamwork. Through practical work the students reflect on how they can react to the increasingly rapid changes in the social and media reality of young people through the contents and methodology of their teaching.
